QED Director: Silvija Davidson

Brought up by a Baltic refugee family in Lancashire, Silvija was taught from toddlerhood to fish, forage, ferment milk and sauerkraut and pickle herrings. Her subsequent culinary development was as much an effort to displace inherited idiosyncrasies as to replicate them. Early exposure to both Ukrainian black bread and Blackpool milk roll undoubtedly inspired (rather later) Loaf, Crust and Crumb, a book devoted to the diverse breads available in Britain, and how to salvage leftovers.

Concerned to both cultivate recognition and stem erosion of quality food and drink, she started running artisan producer workshops and tasting events while working for the International Wine and Food Society. Along with her other half, David Natt, she developed these for other groups and organisations, often producing five-course dinners to illustrate quality and nuance. She also involved herself in political aspects of food, as Chair of Food Policy for the Guild of Food Writers, organiser of numerous conferences, and in her voluntary work for Slow Food as Convivium Leader of the London branch, and for a while Chair and International Director of Slow Food UK.

Freelance food writing, cook book reviewing and editing are really just an excuse for her to root out fascinating condiments and intriguing gadgets ... there isn’t much working space in the kitchen.
