Links within and beyond the QED website

When we give you a link within the QED website, it will normally use the same window, thus replacing the page from which you came, and allowing you to use the back and forward browser buttons. This is absolutely standard practice. Occasionally, though, we will open an internal link in another window if the situation points in that direction: there may be an instance when many people would be expecting to use both the linking page and the linked simultaneously.

However, when it comes to external links, we have decided to open these in a fresh window. This makes it much clearer that you have left QED's information, and you are now in the hands of the linked page's owner. Battles rage in web-design fora: as yet, we have seen no clear agreement about the relative merits of same-window/new-window external links. So we picked one option, for the above reasons.
