Browser choice
There is a wide selection of browsers and versions: we aim to make our website work across the board. However, there are various curiosities, features and bugs which make some things difficult, so it's a compromise. The QED Web editors try to keep up with the latest versions of the more popular browsers, and use the following (links are to developers' download pages).
- Chrome version 12 (Google)
- Firefox version 4 (Mozilla)
- Internet Explorer version 9 (Microsoft)
- Opera version 11 (Opera)
- Safari version 5 (Apple)
It is these versions against which the website can be tested, using a PC.
The most obtrusive inconsistency is in Firefox, which has a problem rendering some of our code in the area of sidebars (whether or not sidebars are invoked on a particular page). Since we do not place links in sidebars which are not available through the logical structure of the site, we have decided to direct our energies towards improving the overall site, rather than strive to create watertight workarounds for this problem: for this reason, you may decide to use another browser to gain access to the QED website.
Internet Explorer 9 seems to work OK, though it is still out of step with all the rest regarding some background/foreground placings (that's just aesthetics). Internet Explorer version 7 and 8 are likely to deliver our content more or less in the manner intended, but we cannot give any guarantees (and of course will not handle anything unsupported by IE9). Internet Explorer versions 6 and earlier are decidedly not recommended: we do not undertake workarounds to meet these outdated browsers' requirements.
Your choice of browser will affect what comes out of your printer — and quite markedly so. Our page about printing attempts to sum up the known differences.
